PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
Tax Season has
Arrived!!!
I'm sure all of you have
just about gotten through the Master Tax Guides
J
Maybe some of you bought extras to give to your loved ones for Valentines
Day. Much better than flowers and chocolates... On second thoughts...
I started my volunteer
free tax preparation for low income tax individuals this week at Hopelink in
Bellevue. I am not a tax expert by any means but I can usually handle the
simple ones. It feels good to give to the community. Sometimes these
individuals are not aware of the Earned Income Credit and have a big
surprise when they get a hefty return. I love being able to surprise them
in this way.
At the January meeting
we heard about Federal Tax Updates. Hopefully this got some of us motivated
for tax season. Lillie Campbell and Sarah Ganger from Clark Nuber provided
the update.
Another
reminder that the 2006
Northwest Regional Conference
is being hosted by the Seattle Chapter next spring! The dates are June 16,
17, and 18, 2006. The theme is "Experience Seattle!"
I am sure they still
need volunteers to help with
all kinds of chores, big and small, preliminary and on-site, in order to
make this conference a big success! Please contact Tina Polf or Susan
Goegebuer or send email to: NWRC06 "at" aswaseattle.org
Hope to see you all at
the February Meeting!
Also a reminder that our
March Meeting will be a joint meeting hosted by IMA on Thursday, March 16th
at the Red Lion Bellevue Inn. Ivan Orton of the King County Prosecutor's
Office will be speaking about Electronic Fraud.
Your
President,
Tina Farmer, CPA

importance of Long-Term Care planning. She is passionate in her message
that Long-Term Care planning is necessary and not just for the elderly.
Throughout her career, Susan has helped people protect their independence
and financial assets from the devastating costs of long-term health care.
Today, 8
million Americans receive some form of Long-Term Care. A nursing home now
averages between $50-100 thousand per year. You could rely on your family,
or Susan can show you how to maintain your independence and have peace of
mind.

Dinner Highlights

Sarah Gangar, CPA, Associate, Clark Nuber PS
"Federal Tax Update"
Lillie and Sarah had an informative look at the upcoming tax season. They
updated us on the following topics: Circular 230 Legal Advice on Federal tax
issues, Hurricane Katrina legislation, Section 199 Manufacturing deduction,
Deferred Compensation, Alternative Minimum tax issues, depreciation and some
individual tax provisions. The most interesting change that will affect the most
taxpayers seems to be the change in definition of a qualifying child. This
uniform definition applies to the dependency exemption, earned income credit,
child credit, dependent care credit and Head of Household filing status.

AUGUST 2005 Dinner Meeting Discussion
At our August meeting, I enjoyed the company of Jeanie McCombs, Senior
Accountant with the Helly Hansen Company here in Redmond. Jeanie shared an
amazing story of a Swedish woman who is kayaking her way around America. I
asked Jeanie to provide me with her website so I could track her progress
and the other ladies at my table asked that it be put on our website so they
could do the same. The website is as follows:
