PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Happy Fall Everyone!

What a wonderful topic we had at our August meeting, regarding the importance of sleep. With the wonderful long days that are still holding on as we approach the beginning of September, I must confess, I haven’t been diligent enough to put Dr. Darley’s suggestions into practice. I hope each of you that attend, found the presentation helpful in your own lives and were able to share this knowledge with you loved ones.

A few quick reminders:

I look forward to seeing you all in September.

Sincerely,

Holly Smith

AUGUST SPEAKER HIGHLIGHTS

Catherine Darley, ND is a licensed naturopathic physician in Washington state and was our guest speaker. If we do not get enough sleep then performance suffers, so a good nights sleep is essential. She explained the different stages of 3 stages of sleep and the sleep patterns during the REM (rapid eye movement) stages.

The three consciousness of non-REM sleep is 1) light sleep is first where you drift in and out, then 2) eye movement slows down, then 3) deep sleep, where brain waves are very slow and this is the repairing stage. REM sleep is towards the end, where most dreams take place.

Dr Darley, mentioned the 3 most common sleep disorders....sleep apnea, insomnia and sleep deprivation. Performance suffers when you do not sleep well. Driving, cognitive thinking, physical and emotional performance is affected. Hormones also affect sleep patterns for women.

She gave us tips on how to prepare to get a good night sleep:

  1. First, turn your mind off before you go to bed. Write down those ‘to do’ list.
  2. Take 15 minutes before bed to go over how your day went or journalize them before going to bed.
  3. Set a sleep schedule that allows adequate sleep time. Adults need 8-9 hours.
  4. If you are not spending enough time in bed, move your bedtime earlier in 15 minute intervals every 5 days or so until you wake up on your own.
  5. Go to bed and get up at the same time each day including weekends. This allows your body rhythm to be “entrained” to those times.
  6. Create a quiet dark, cool bedroom. Temperatures below 65 degrees is best.
  7. Do not watch TV in the bedroom and ideally have the computer in another room.
