PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Greetings Everyone!

What a wonderful trip to the National Joint Convention in Vegas with Paula Bishop and Elaine Chan. The conference was great; we even had a speaker from the Federal Reserve on the last.

Our next dinner meeting will be magical, it is the fabulous dessert auction! This is a wonderful event to bring friends and family (young and old) and to introduce them to all the wonderful ladies you visit/network with each month. Our Dessert Auction Committee is searching for the most decadent cakes to match everyone’s sweet tooth (there will be something from everyone-whether it be from our live or silent auction).

Lastly, but not at all least, our chapter scholarship applications are due November 11th. Please inform your colleagues/friends/family that applications are available on our website, under the scholarship tab.

I look forward to seeing you in November.

Sincerely,

Holly Smith

Chapter President

NOVEMBER MEETING: Scholarship Dessert Auction

Please invite family, friends, colleagues and fellow students – the more the merrier! Get a group of friends/colleagues together and have a table for your group. There will be live auction items, as well as a multitude of silent auction items. Of course: Chocolate, chocolate, Thanksgiving extravaganzas, treats to bring to the office or to a holiday get-together (that you would be proud to bring), and some items to just 'eat and enjoy yourself'!

Don't forget, the goal of the Dessert Auction is to raise funds for our annual Student Scholarship, given to a student (female or male) pursuing a major in accounting or finance. Come join the fun and know that proceeds go to a good cause.

Everyone is welcomed to add a contribution to the silent auction tables both homemade and purchased. Just bring the dessert with you that night, and a space will be made for your entry, along with a bid sheet. There is a buyer out there for every experiment. Everyone needs a dessert for treat for the upcoming holidays. If you know in advance that you would like to bring something, you can forward a quick message to me and we make sure you have a good viewing spot!

Donations (unless specified) are split between the Student Scholarship Fund and Member Education Fund, helping to lower the cost of ASWA educational conferences during the year.

To allow for maximum viewing time for the desserts, try to arrive around 6pm so that you can roam around the silent auction items before we sit down for dinner!

OCTOBER SPEAKER HIGHLIGHTS

Debrena Jackson Gandy, an international speaker, business consultant and success coach spoke on "Being the Next-Level Leader". We as women, can have a strong voice in this world. We need to stop apologizing. She gave a great example when a women is seated by the window on a airplane and needs to get out of her seat. Debrena recalls watching women sheepishly apologizing as she scoots across others to get to the aisle. Men don't do that! They kindly say "Excuse me, I need to get to the aisle". We as women need to do the same.

Women need to have an engaging communication style when we want someone to do something or join an organization. An example might be a situation where you need a volunteer to help you. Don't just give them the duties, but engage them instead. Begin by telling them about this great organization, how excited you are, how you've been watching how well you do your job and want you to help. Using this engaging communication technique works much better than just giving them the duties.

While living in Southern California, she noticed the people were not happy even though they had all their material wealth around them. As she studied this strange behavior she conducted an experiment on herself to see if changing how one cares for themselves would change their disposition an outlook of their surroundings. Hence, she wrote her book "All the Joy You can Stand". You have to have joy and balance in your life and to first take care of yourself before taking care of others. She stressed we need to refill our pitcher of water before we can fill others water glass.

Her powerful message is a constant reminder how we need to find our spiritual need or inner power to make a difference in this world.

At the end of her session, Debrena generously donated her last hardbound book
